All Work And No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy

Weekly weigh-in: 221.2
Weekly weigh-in: 217.0
Loss: -4.2
Total loss: 74.5 lbs.
Emotion: Keep on truckin'-ish

I’m as boring as snot.

Really, I’m a one-man yawnfest.

Each morning, I get up at the same time and eat the same ol’ breakfast. In my food journal, I’ve started writing “SOB” next to breakfast, shorthand for “same ol’ breakfast.”

Around eleven, I’ll generally eat a handful of almonds. By then, I’ll have had four or five glasses of water. Don't get between me and the bathroom.

A half hour later, I’ll head out to the gym and exercise for 45 minutes or so. Usually the same routine, day after day. Luckily, they change out the security guard at the door every day, because I'll generally use the same joke all week when I check in (last week: "I'll give you ten dollars to work out for me today").

In the middle of the afternoon, I’ll have a cup of green tea (finally learned to gag it down) if I’m not hungry. I’ll have an apple if I am hungry.

After that I try to…. hello… hello… wake up. WAKE UP! I’m sorry, I’ll try to pick up the pace here with a joke.

A few weeks ago, I went to my high school reunion, even though I hadn't been to one in decades. When I walked in, I thought I recognized this woman over in the corner, so I approached her and extended my hand in greeting.

"You look like Helen Brown," I said.

"Well," the woman snapped back, "you don't look so hot in blue either."

That one make you work too hard? Okay, how about this:

Q: What's the difference between a professional blogger and a large cheese pizza?

A: A large cheese pizza can feed a family of four.

Okay, got that out of my system. Now back to the dull old dullness. My point about all this ho-hum humdrum is that a successful weight-loss journey can be pretty boring at times, can be stale, can be dull, dull, dull. It can be as boring as a spreadsheet about. which spreadsheet-making software makes the best spreadsheets.

But dull days can make for some spectacular weigh-ins.

  3. The kid is adorable. As for boring, yep I eat the same breakfast every day, do the same exercise routine, yadayadayada but as boring as it is, ITS WORKING. Losing a size isn't boring. Losing a roll isn't boring. Looking fanbloodytastic isn't boring.

I'll stick to my salads for breakie.

  4. Big laugh over Helen Brown. And I'll tell you to switch it up some, confuse the body, change up your food, throw in some different workouts, you know, just for shits and giggles......but why fix what ain't broke? Go Jack Go!

  5. That's great!!!

And you weren't putting me to sleep. When you work with BEH kids, you savor every moment you spend with "boring" adults, you know what I mean. And if you don't, just trust me. :)

  8. As always Jack you are doing awesome - even if you are achieving it in a boring mundane way you are still achieving it!!

  13. Weight loss routines are boring. But I was thinking about it (only for a second because---ooh! something shiny!) and I think that our fat routines were boring, too. I'd get up, eat a lot, watch tv a lot, eat some more, go to a movie, eat, then go to bed. Second verse, same as the first and all of that.

We don't have delicious awesome food anymore to be the highlight of our days. We don't have calorie comas to look forward to. Which means me have to CREATE the highlight of our day from scratch.

  14. I sincerely hope you're not whinging about a 4+lb loss, Mr Sh!t, because I'd have to come and beat you up. And then steal your loss! Now quit moaning and get back to that good work you're doing!

  15. Great loss - you obviously had one hell of a boring week (and I don't look so hot in brown either)!

  16. CONGRATS!!! Yes, sometimes boring reaps great rewards! I am just like you.. same ole same ole BUT I have managed to change around the food each day & add in new things here & there! I amaze myself... occasionally but not too often. :-) Although today, I actually took a different route on my Sunday jog... OMG, Jack, is whatever going on in that mind of yours heading my way? NOT! I was just tired & had to make a "pit stop" I decided not to go back out!!!

Really great stuff on the weight loss! Keep it up! I know you will!

  17. Oooh, great loss! Congrats! It's true, boring makes for some great weigh ins. It's also true that our previous lives were boring, too, just in a different way.

I'm sorry that you seem to have caught my ennui from yesterday, though. It goes away in a day. :o)

  18. Congrats on the great week! Woo Hoo!!!!!

Does Green Tea actually do anything? I heard it was a great weight loss tool, but wondered if that was true.

  20. That's big time, way to go!

You're doing a really incredible job with your weight loss, it's awesome to be able to witness.

Your "boring' routine just sounds like a locked in success machine to me. Keep it up. High fiving a hobo is on the horizon for goodness sake.

    All my best man.

  22. Great loss! You oughta try some different exercise, Jack. Zumba perhaps? Aerobic stripping? ;)

  23. Spectacular! I wish for my weigh-ins to become as boring as yours.

  24. I have pretty much the SOT (same ol thing) to eat everyday too. So don't feel bad, you are doing great!

  26. great weight loss !

one thing my boring routine does for me is stop my insatiable appetite for food entertainment. food as fuel serves me much better than food as culture comfort and hobby.
many don't have to take it to this extreme, but i do. so far, so great!

  27. 4.2 pound weekly loss......is BORING to you? Losing 1.9% (yes...used a calculator) of your current body weight is BORING to you? BEING LESS THAN 18 POUNDS AWAY FROM ONEDERLAND IS BORING TO YOU???

    Ok. Sorry. Got riled up.

Look. You rock. Plain and simple.

Bored? Then...for GOD'S SAKE....come up with 3 different breakfast meals instead of one...and alternate. Or...heck...pull a number out of a hat each morning to see which one is the winner of the day.

Then...do something TOTALLY insane at the gym...like go stand on a balance board gizmo while throwing a medicine ball up in the air..or some such other thing that looks insane. Try a different cardio machine each of the next 3 visits...see which one makes your quads scream the most. Ask someone with amazing abs to show you some ab exercises (I did this....and it turned into an insane 30 minute tutorial which was completely entertaining even though I can not do hardly any of the exercises). Make up a new exercise for those exercise band thingies with handles....do something totally weird and random and see how long it takes until someone else comes over and tries the same thing.

Ok. My work here is done.

And..sorry....based on your posts and this blog.....trying to convince us you are boring will not work. :)

  28. Hooray for Same Shit, Different Day!!!! Excellent boring work this week Jack. Excellent. :)

  29. I don't know...that seemed like a pretty exciting day to me. Especially the part about eating the apple.

    Nice weigh-in.

  30. You're a living breathing typing snoozefest, Jack. We don't all read you religiously because we actually enjoy it. We read you because we like knowing that more exciting/witty than you.

    Uh-huh.

And you couldn't have done better with the scale this week? Seriously? You've got issues, man. (If, of course, awesomeness is an issue.)

(Love Greta's idea about pulling the number out of the hat. I may just have to do that!)

  31. OMG if I lost 4+ pounds in one week I would be talking about how awesome I am, not how boring!

Congratulations, Jack. But I am afraid you are starting to get too skinny for my taste! Keep some of that meat on your bones for your lady fans.

Can't you do a body shot with the head cut off so we can assess the physique and tell you whether or not you have to lose more?

    C'mon, we just don't know Jack Sh*t!

  32. Congratulations on your progress! Your food plan may be boring, but you certainly are not..:-)

  33. congrats on that big ole boring loss!!! cute baby :-)

  34. Be on the lookout for likely Hobos Jack. They aren't as easy to find as you think.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like consistency and try to keep from straying from the SOB method too often.

  36. Just stumbled on your blog tonight...thanks for the laugh! Your weight loss is impressive, and inspiring. Congrats on the good week!

  38. great weight loss Jack- keep it going. I could do with some inspiration. Nothing as boring as a gall stone diet I can tell you. No nice food and pain as a reward. Hmmmph
