Waterlogged Babies

Weekly weigh-in: xxx.xx
Loss: -x.x
Total loss: -xx.xx
Emotion: xxxxxxxxx

There’s this group of people standing on a river bank, just joshing around and having a good ol’ time. Suddenly someone screams “OH MY GOD!”

Everyone turns their heads and the cries of an infant pierces the afternoon frivolity. Shocked, they see a little baby floating–well, drowning if you want to be truthful–in the flowing water.

One person immediately dives in to rescue the child, but as this is going on, yet another baby comes floating down the river.

And then another and another and another! People continue to jump in to save the babies, and then see that one person has started to walk away from the group still on shore.

“Where are you going?” they shout accusingly.

His response: “I'm going upstream to stop whomever's throwing babies into the river!”

That’s kind of how I feel about this weight-loss business. I spent years and years trying to deal with the effects of living too fat and too sedentary before finally getting serious and heading upstream to do something about the cause.

That said, I’ve been out of town on a business trip most of the week, so the scale and I aren’t on speaking terms right now.

I’m back though now… and I’m making my way upstream.

  1. First comment, whoo! I like this comparison. I hope the scale isn't too harsh to you next week. :)

  3. I have a client who travels ALOT and always seems to sabotage himself on these business trips. I have tons of advice on how to stay on track when out of town. There aren't a lot of good choices and you are out of your routine when going out of town. Pack some things you know will be visual cues as well as healthy choices when you aren't at home. Glad you recognize it, that is the most important step.

  5. AMEN! Don't you just feel like pushing whoever is throwing those babies into the water? And saying, "Stop being so !@#$ stupid eh?" Thank you for the awesome analogy.

  9. Jack, honestly, it is life long.. there will be ups & downs & stables.... it is what it is but the fact that you keep at it & don't let this deter you is what matters because it will change again & from a person turning 53 in November plus being a women with hormones, I can tell you that upstream comes often.. just being honest!

    Keep up the good work!

  10. Jack,
It's wonderful when you show that you need us just as much as we need you.

Back at it little soldier. You can do it.

  11. Congrats on being a presenter at FitBloggin 11! Maybe between now and then you can get the scale back on track by throwing it and 100's more like it into the river. Such a cathartic weight training program! As for the weight gain while on the road, sounds like somebody needs to read http://funandfit.org/2010/08/5-no-10-tips-to-road-trip-dining/. DId you know that plugging one's own post results in calorie loss that is guilt free?

  13. Lovely analogy. Like you, I struggled with those effects of treating my body like crap before getting proactive and attacking the root cause. Those business trips seem to be pretty rough for you...just keep doing what you can to avoid the consequences!

  15. Good analogy. However, I've found it rather fruitless to figure out the why of how I got fat. It would be like trying to find out why some sicko is throwing babies in the river. Don't matter why--just get him stopped. There may be something at the headwaters that I need to deal with, but waiting until I understand why isn't doing me any good.
