This, That & The Other Thing

Weekly weigh-in: -------
Loss: ----
Total loss: ------
Emotion: -------

This scale-ignoring business is difficult, lemme tell you.

There’s a cold comfort in that sneak peek, in that quick assurance that the weight isn’t somehow finding its way back from the dark corners where I’ve banished it.

However, I’m still flying blind, and it’s still a disconcerting feeling. Especially since my appetite seems to have ratcheted up with the increase in strength training. I really don’t feel like I’m incinerating the calories like I was before, but I’m sure a hungry-mungry these days. I’ve been mindful to pay attention to my protein as I try to pack on a little more muscle, but lately it seems like I’m fighting off the urge to eat more and more and more.

Speaking of cleaning my plate, I was going to do some bloggy clean-up work here today. There were a couple of folks that recognized me with some pretty nice awards, but I forgot to bookmark them at the time and I forgot who gave them to me, what they were for and what I was supposed to do with them. Let’s just say that I was awarded the Generic Blog Award award and leave it at that, okay?

Speaking of awards, I’m still pulling my hair out over whom to award my little cash giveaway. So many worthy recipients, so many compelling stories. There are folks out there struggling in so many ways, yet still making progress towards their goals. It’s times like this that I wish I were a millionaire instead of a hundredaire.

During my first pass, I was only about to eliminate one contestant: Mary from A Merry Life, who was planning on giving the $100 prize to her mother. You may not know this, but Mary’s mom is the lady who spent half the summer bad-mouthing me in the comment section of Mary’s blog for all my sassy talk. I’m not saying her mother didn’t have good reason to fire snippy comments at me (nobody likes being stood up for her high school prom), but c’mon…

On an totally unrelated note, I’ve been getting quite a few emails lately from folks just getting started on their weight-loss journeys. It’s been nearly a year now since I made those first few bumbling, stumbling steps, but I remember them like it was yesterday. It’s really got me thinking about the oooomph it takes to get that ball rolling, the want-to it requires to turn a life change into a lifestyle. It’s really gotten me doing some heavy-duty thinking on the subject, so expect to see some more rambling in the not-too-distant future…

As for today… today I’m staying off the scale but not off-plan.

I may not know what I weigh, but I know where I’m going.

Note: Please keep in mind that today's the day you're supposed to set your scale back ten pounds for Daylighter Savings Time. Just another public service annoncement from Jack Sh*t, Gettin' Fit.

  1. Oh, that's right! Thanks for the scale reminder, I would have totally forgot. :)

Thanks for the reminder about how hard it is to get started...somehow that reminder makes it easier to keep things on track.

  3. Staying off the scale is a difficult thing to do. But sometimes the reward is worth it. I think it helps us to learn to trust ourselves.

Good luck in your decision...wouldn't want to have to decide! And I too often wish I was a millionaire so I could help people!

  4. I'm curious - are you still doing cardio along with the strength training or just exclusive strength training?

Hmmm...I think we're actually supposed to be going ahead in the spring which is just no fun at all!

  8. Every now and then I step on the scale when I walk by. Sometimes I just kick it though.

Good job with the weights, my friend. You're doing great. :)

  12. That last comment was tooooooooooo funny!

As for the weight & weight training, I do both weights & cardio but I know most are not up to doing my crazy type workouts. For me, I have to do both! I wish I were like MizFit who got diminishing returns with more but for me, it just don't work that way... dang!

Keep pluggin Jack! It may take time & patience, as I always say, to figure out the right combo for you. I know it did for me!

Looking forward to your upcoming posts!

  13. Be careful, Jack -- it's easy to start (over)compensating on the calories when you increase your workouts. Not that you're not being cautious; I know it's hard, though.

  15. i find that whenever i do some oddball strength training, like going skiing once a year or taking a new workout out class that i'm always more hungry than usual.

i'm sure you know this, but increasing your muscle speeds up your metabolism, so it would make sense that your body craves more calories to keep up.

  16. You need to start harvesting cinnamon bark. The kind that grows on that tree in your backyard. Yeah, it doesn't matter what kind of tree is. Just cut a piece off and start chewing. The sap will burn off your tastebuds, and the fiber will keep you full. As in backed up.

Or, you could watch your protein. Either one.

  17. I test myself by getting dresed everyday, If my bra cuts off my oxygen or my panties feel like they are slicing me in half, then I skip lunch :)

  18. Not seeing the scale is scary but I totally get why you are not doing it. What is you goal weight? Maybe you are so close to it and your body is holding on to your weight.

  19. hundredaire...lol...guess that makes me a pennyaire, lmao...

I still think you should give the award to Violet, who's going to hang it on her frig til her goal weight and then send it on to someone else. After all, the $100 isn't going to make or break any of us when it comes to our weight loss goals, no matter how penniless a lot of us are in this sh*tty economy. But...the inspiration and motivation that the $100 will provide, staring at us from the frig, can make all the difference in the world. Passing it on to other like-minded people is a fantastic motivating thought. :)

  20. The only time I stand on the scale is at Weight Watchers on a Wednesday night. I was starting to do it every day for a while there and it was driving me crazy. I think you're amazing for avoiding it altogether. Good luck!

  21. Is it too late to really enter? I saw a Zumba video with sticks that shake today. STICKS THAT SHAKE!!! Like rattles.

I actually do not want the money, I would just love to see a check written out the theantijared.

Wait, who am I kidding! I want the Zumba!

  22. i am a fat lady who hired a personal trainer and lost like 5 pounds in 5 weeks - i sure hope it was because i am building muscle

  23. Remember to feed those muscles. They need food too. :) I know that when I was doing a ton of exercising, my calorie requirements were much higher, so something like sparkpeople can help you determine that if you need to. Otherwise, keep eating the good foods, and I think you'll be fine. :)
