Signs It’s Go-Time

• There are more than a dozen empty wine bottles and/or used-up whipped cream canisters in the weekly recyclable bin.

• Your sweatpants no longer fit.

• You’re recently reinstituted “Fry-Daddy Friday” at your house.

• You forgot there was such a thing as “calories”.

• You’ve gone back to using marshmallow crème as a condiment.

• Following message pops up on your television: “Congratulations! You’ve watched every movie and TV show in the Netflix library!”

• Before going for a walk, you have to Google how-to instructions.

• When you chance your sheets, you find a half dozen slices of pizza.

• You realize you’ve been using your workout DVDs as coasters.

• You notice that Buffalo Wild Wings has named a menu item after you.

• In your food journal, you find it faster and easier to list foods you didn’t eat rather than ones you did.

• At least three times a week, you have movie theater popcorn for dinner.

The Three Not-So-Little Pigs

Once upon a time  there were three not-so-little pigs who wanted to drop a little bacon, if you know what I mean.

Well, the first not-so-little pig tried exercising every day, but he didn't want to change his diet.

The Big Jack Wolf came up to his door and said, "Not-so-little pig, not-so-little pig, you've gotta eat better, dummy."

The not-so-little pig replied, "Not by the hair of my hungry, hungry tummy."

The Big Jack Wolf huffed, puffed and blogged, but the first not-so-little pig didn't listen and never saw good results on the scale.

Well, the second not-so-little pig tried eating less, but couldn't bring himself to ever break a sweat.

The Big Jack Wolf came to his door and said, "Not-so-little pig, not-so-little pig, you've got to exercise, fella."

The not-so-little pig replied, "Not by the hair or my curly little tail-a."

The Big Jack Wolf huffed, puffed and blogged, but the second not-so-little pig didn't listen and never saw good results on the scale.

Well, the third not-so-little pig decided to get crazy and ttry eating less and exercising more.

The Big Jack Wolf came up to his door and said, "Not-so-little pig, not-so-little pig, I love this approach you're taking."

The not-so-little-but-getting-littler pig replied, "But everybody at the gym still calls me a pig."

"Just tell 'em what I do when they say something mean," smiled the Big Jack Wolf.

'What's that?' inquired the pig.

"Why don't you just huff and puff and blow me?"

THE DAILY SCALEY
Scale reminds me of my vacuum cleaner... they both suck.

• Charges 99¢ a minute.

• Admits to being a Nazi war criminal.

• Stays on phone for entire session, in which you overhear several comments about “this fat loser that I’m working with right now.”

• Not sure what a “lunge” is.

• Insists that you wear thong and ass-less chaps during session.

• Keeps curling up under bench press bench and falling asleep.

• All instructions are in baby talk.

• Wears a shirt that reads “CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAITOR”

• Whips you across the back with belt while you’re doing rowing machine.

• Carries a water bottle filled with Jack Daniels.

• Hits you in the facew with pepper spray if you don’t finish a set.

• Keeps talking about some post his buddy Jack wrote on his dumbass blog.

Fitness Center Conversation Starters

Since I've been in the gym so much lately, I've been breaking in some new conversation starters for you. Go make a new buddy...

  • “Look how puffy my muscles are getting!”
  • “I was gonna take human growth hormone, but I read somewhere that Flintstones chewables are basically the same thing.”
  • “What’s up, my brother from another mother?”
  • “Excuse me–where’s the hopscotch grid?”
  • “Did you know that a full bladder is roughly the size of a softball?”
  • “Check ‘em out… spandex mittens!”
  • “Ewwww…somebody filled my water bottle with mayonnaise.”
  • “Do you think these short shorts are too short?”
  • “I’m a maniac, maaaaaniac, on the floor. And I’m dancing like I’ve NEVER danced BEFORE. What? What? WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?”
  • “Will you be my treadmill partner?”
  • “Hey, I’m gonna be over there on the Taffy Puller if you need me.”
  • “I think my personal trainer hates me. Probably because I slashed her tires.”
  • “Hey, wanna watch me do arm curls?”
  • “I just completed a marathon. Yeah, it was the Gilligan’s Island marathon on TV Land.”
  • “Tag… you’re it!”
  • “Hey, you’ve got a wireless cell phone.”
  • “Do you read Jack Sh*t, Gettin’ Fit? Me neither.”

More Ways to Make More Time for Exercise

• On January 1st of each year, pay all of your bills for the entire year.

• Instead of wasting time doing laundry, invest in industrial-sized barrel of Fabreeze.

• When working a sudoku puzzle, just put random numbers in random squares.

• Go through car wash at 60 miles per hour.

• One way to get your house cleaned faster is to threaten to fire your housekeeper unless she picks up the pace.

• When dropping your kids off, teach them to roll out of the car so you don’t have to come to a complete stop. They’ll think it’s fun and you’ll pick up a few valuable seconds in your day.

• If you have a flat tire, just keep driving, moron.

• Speed-pray.

• See if you can find a combination manicurist-proctologist.

• Keep a razor in your car so you can shave your legs while stuck in traffic.

• How about this for a bedtime story: Once upon a time, there was a princess who lived happily ever after. The end.

My Fitlosophy

I just returned home from Fitbloggin, a gathering of an odd mix of weight losers, healthy living advocates and super hardcore fitness freaks.

I enjoyed getting to meet a lot of interesting folks that I feel like I already knew and even ranalltheway in my first “official” 5K (my plan to take off into the lead and then lead the group in the wrong direction was laid to waste as some of the more accomplished runners finished the run while I was still lacing up my sneakers).

I’ll admit that I was a little bummed out as I listened to a super-fit lady (-4% body fat) discuss emerging trends in exercise. It’s a little bit technical, but here’s the breakdown: everything you’re doing is wrong.

You’d have to be a rocket scientist to really understand the whole deal (dammit… I left MIT two semesters shy of my Rocket Science degree), but it was a trifle disheartening to hear about my workout suckage.

As she droned on about HIIT and carthamasomething, I started thinking about my own Fitlosophy, and I guess it can be boiled down to this:  something is better than nothing.

For a long time, I did a whole lot of nothing. Oh, I got in some exercise from time to time, but there was no rhyme or reason to it. I didn’t work to improve my overall health and I certainly didn’t push myself to any degree.

Now I have goals, even if they’re not always well-defined or working toward specific results. I could be doing better; I’ve spent most of my life doing worse.

I want to replace some of this stubborn fat with steely muscle.

I want to break a sweat running a few miles, not climbing a flight of steps.

I want each day to start with challenge and end a sense of accomplishment (with the cling of a sweat-soaked shirt slipped in somewhere in between).

I want to wear smaller clothes and wear out running shoes.

I want to feel better and feel better about myself.

I want to live fully and age gracefully.

I may not be doing everything perfectly, may not be doing everything in the most optimal manner possible… but I am doing.

And doing > not doing.

Work Your Ass

Sweat sweat, shirt’s all wet.
We gonna work out, yeah you bet!

Watch the cardio.

Feel so good when I do too much.
5 AM, lace the running shoes up.
Time to hit the road!

Healthy blogger, part-time jogger,
Each day you are runnin’ farther.
Come on, honey
Let’s get runny.
Time to get wearious.

So work your ass if you are strong,

For all the right reasons.

May be overweight, but we will never be, never be

Anything but fit,

With a nitty gritty pretty muscly physique.

Won’t you come on, and come on, and

Work your ass!

Just come on and come and

Work your ass!

Slam slam, oh hot damn,

What part of “participation” don't you understand?

Wish you’d just work out (work out already)

Can’t quit trying to get fit.
Listen to your old buddy Jackie Sh*t.

It’s your time right now (it’s your time right now)

Chest press spotta’, leg-lift squatta’

Call me when you need a workout partna’

Don't be fatty.

Just get sweaty.

No more beer in us!

So work your ass if you are strong

For all the right reasons.

May be overweight, but we will never be, never be

Anything but fit,

With a nitty gritty pretty muscly physique.

Won't you come on, and come on, and

Work your ass!

Just come on and come and

Work your ass!

Won't you come on and come on and

Work your ass!
Just come on and come and

Work your ass!

Oh sh*t… my ass is chunky... that sucks!

So if you’re too jump to plump,

And you're feelin’ like a lump (feelin’ like a lump)

You could choose to change your ways
Y
ou can always, you can always

Make your life your own...

So work your ..

So work your ass if you are strong

For all the right reasons.

All my blogger friends, we will never be, never be

Anything but fit,

With a nitty gritty pretty muscly physique.

So work your ass if you are strong

For all the right reasons

May be overweight, but we will never be, never be

Anything but fit

With a nitty gritty pretty muscly physique.

Won't you come on! and come on! and

Work your ass!

Just come on and come and

Work your ass!

Won't you come on! and come on! and

Work your ass

For you

Just come on and come and

Work your ass...for you

Mix up your workout
With a sweat-getting groove.

(See B up above).
Do a few reps with these,
For arm muscles you’ll love.

Our body’s pain-killers.
But I still prefer the one
Made by whiskey distillers.

But you’ll see benefits,
When your body’s more bendy.

They’re your biceps, you know.
Who wants some tickets
To the Gun Show?

Work your hamstrings and
See good results soon.

It’s time for true grit.
Because the more you give,
The more you get.

Steroids and that junk
Makes some muscles bigger,
Makes other things shrunk.

It’s what you call it when our bodies
Burn fat for energy.

L is for Lats
Those muscles in your back
Under all of that hair
(If you’re like your friend Jack).

M is for Membership
Be a part of a gym.
If you can’t afford the bill,
You can try sneaking in.

N is for Nutrition
Eating better’s a rule,
Cuz your engine runs better
When it gets better fuel.

Yes it’s “no pain, no gain.”
Of course that’s bad advice,
If you suffer a strain.

P is for Personal Trainer
With smiles on their faces,
They’ll hurt you in places,
You didn’t know you had places.

Q is for Quads
Lunges are great for your thighs
If you like crying in public,
Try these on for size.

R is for Reps
It’s best to do oodles.
Enough that your arms feel like
Overcooked noodles.

S is for Spotting
It just takes a sec,
But please don’t drop weights
On the weightlifter’s neck.

T is for Testosterone
It’s what makes men more manly
But we can’t blame our weight
Gains on it (or can we?)

U is for Underwear
Because no matter your stance.
If you try to lift too much,
You may crap your pants.

V is for Vitamins
Like my Flinstones Chewable.
Hey, it’s the only way that I’ve found
To make vitamin-taking doable.

W is for Weights
Keep raising the bar
And if you overdo it,
Hey, I know CPR.

X is for X-ray
And no, I’m not jokin’,
If your arm’s bent back that way,
It just may be broken.

Y is for You
You’re the one benefiting,
From overall better health
And from your slack’s not splitting.

Z is for Zealot
You’ve become a believer.
What will you achieve next,
You achieving achiever?

New Ways to Incorporate Exercise Into Your Everyday Life

  • 50 lb. coffee mug
  • When driving, change lanes every five seconds to build strong triceps
  • During meeting, drop pen under table; while retrieving it, do twenty push-ups
  • Bathroom stall squats
  • Bring your Abdominizer to church
  • Hire a housekeeper and use the extra time to go to the gym or do your own housekeeping and pay someone to go to the gym for you
  • Take the wheels off your stroller
  • Men: changing clothes over and over can actually burn a significant amount of calories, so each morning, try on a bunch of different outfits before deciding what to wear. Women: keep doing the same you’ve been doing
  • Do leg lifts while getting haircut
  • Did you know that sex can burn over 1,000 calories per hour if you do it on an elliptical machine while holding kettlebells?
  • When you’re taking kids to the park, there are a lot of ways to get in exercise; one way if to leave them there and go meet your personal trainer
  • Park in the fartherest handicap parking space
  • While sitting on couch watching hours of television, quit sitting on couch watching hours of television

Listening to Your Body

Body: Jack? Oh Jackie…?

Jack: You? What do you want?

Body: I need you to do me a favor...

Jack: Whatcha need?

Body: I want to you to grab a big ol’ bowl of chips and guacamole, maybe a beer or two... and sit your ass down in that easy chair over yonder.

Jack: Excuse me?

Body: Look, those shows we DVR’d ain’t gonna watch themselves…

Jack: I was thinking about heading out for a workout.

Body: Awww no. We did that yesterday.

Jack: I know…

Body: And you went for a run yesterday morning.

Jack: So what?

Body: So… haven’t you ever heard of a little thing called an “off” day?

Jack: I think I banked quite a few “off” days in the past.

Body: No, no… it’s a “use ‘em or lose ‘em” kind of deal.

Jack: I’m not sure I trust you, buddy.

Body: I just don’t see what harm there is in a little downtime in front of the tube…

Jack: And I think you’ve got another good workout in you today.

Body: I’m soooooore.

Jack: You’re a sorehead.

Body: I’m serious as a…

Jack: …heart attack?

Body: Yeah, as a… no. That’s not what I meant.

Jack: Come on… the sooner we get started, the sooner we get done.

Body: But I don’t wanna!

Jack: I said, come on!

Body: Don’t you know that you’re supposed to be listening to your body?

Jack: I tried that for a while and it didn’t work out.

Body: Yeah?

Jack: Yeah… now it’s time for my body to start listening to me.

Ways to Make More Time for Exercise

  • Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner all at the same time
  • Use a shampoo with conditioner in it… and toothpaste… and floss

  • DVR your favorite shows and watch them at 12x speed

  • During arguments with your spouse, agree to any damn thing just to get it over with quickly

  • Learn the ancient art of speed sleeping

  • Continuously move West into new time zones

  • Don’t waste time dragging out the Bat-signal; go right for the Bat-phone!

  • Hire a nice lady to clean your house and a dashing young man to do all the yardwork (I’m assuming that you’re filthy rich, of course)

  • Turn off the internet

  • Keep an ongoing list of people who have wronged you and exact your revenge all at one time (preferably at a party where they’re all in attendance)

  • Order steak medium rare instead of well done

  • If you’re on a highway where the speed limit is 60 mph, and you drive one mile per hour faster, it’ll save you 60 seconds for every hour you drive. That can really add up!

  • Combine activities, such as paying bills and showering

  • Tired of wasting time sitting in the waiting room at the vet? Spay your pets yourself (I can walk you through it… okay, first you’ll need an application to veterinary school…)

  • Instead of “you’re”, always just type “your” – everyone knows it means the same thing!

  • Instead of stepping on a scale, just “guesstimate” your weight

  • When helping your child with math homework, just make up answers to get through it fast

  • Lather and rinse, but do not repeat; I repeat, DO NOT REPEAT.

  • Do some research of which religion has the fastest church services and go with that one

  • Observe “Double Daylight Savings Time”

  • Stop churning your own butter and start buying it at grocery store

  • Wash and dry your laundry at the same time

  • Once a week, have Pop-Tart dinner night

  • Install a shredder in your mailbox

  • Quit reading Jack Sh*t, Gettin’ Fit

Lending a Hand

Note: Since the Jack Sh*t Players did all the heavy lifting today, it freed me up to engage in a little guest posting action for my buddy Jewlia Goulia as she begins a big C25K push. Check it out here.

Excuses For Not Exercising Today

  • “Didn’t eat my Wheaties.”
  • “That old guy at the gym that looks just like Popeye creeps me out.”
  • “Currently using exercise DVD as a coaster; don’t want glass to leave water ring on the furniture.”
  • “Worried that my gym might be haunted.”
  • “Spilled my energy drink. Now low on energy…”
  • “Still on hold with Comcast.”
  • “Spandex pants are still out on the clothesline.”
  • “My little Wii Fit fellow looks sad.”
  • “Already worked out one day in a row this week. What am I, a machine?”
  • “Still embarrassed after falling off elliptical last week.”
  • “Mirrors at the gym make me look 20 lbs. heavier.”
  • “This episode of Dexter that I DVRed isn’t going to watch itself…”
  • “Don’t want to let go of any of my precious, precious sweat.”
  • “Way behind on my catalog browsing.”
  • “Pulled a muscle changing smoke alarm battery.”
  • “Personal trainer looked at me funny last time I was there.”
  • “Dog poo still on running shoes…”
  • “Can’t find my lucky workout socks.”
  • “I’m feeling a little H1N1y”
  • “Dog ate my heart rate monitor.”
Whenever I hear people’s excuses for not exercising, they generally sound just about as lame as these. Do yourself a favor and GO GET YOUR SWEAT ON!
