Time to Turn it Up a Notch

Sometimes you're just chugging along on that healthy living highway, and you come to a startling realization:  you're going nowhere fast.

Let me let you in on a secret:  going nowhere fast really sucks.

When you're waltzing about on this weight-loss watusi in a two-pound-forward-one-pound-back fashion... well, it's a painfully slow way to do things. Even slower is those times when you go one step forward, two (maybe three) steps back.

I don't know how it is for you, but I feel like I'm doing all the right things most of the time and, much like my 401K account, I'm not getting much of a return on my investment.

So...

So maybe it's time for me to reassess my commitment to what I'm doing, double down on my dedication. I'm planning on engaging a new personal trainer to shake up my routine. I just downloaded an app to *gasp* track what I eat. I'm getting ready for a little full-scale warfare.

Don't worry–I'm not going to fill this space up with super serious sermons and rah-rah rigamarole (at least not very often, that is). Nobody's getting an invitation to a pity party. I may just, from time to time, attempt to give myself a kick in the seat of the pants... but you know, that's probably something that wouldn't hurt you to hear either..

It's time to see if I've got another gear.

Jack, that link will take you to Dawne's blog where she has started a small movement called "Pull a Hard 10" where we are all committing to 10 days of above and beyond dieting and exercise to get us all back in the right frame of mind. feel free to hop on board if you want!

  3. Kicking it up a notch..yep that was my plan..and the road had other plans for me...I want to run..really want to run...but attempts have shown me that while mentally I was prepared, my body is NOT ready. So, I am TURNING the notch and moving in a different direction. Softer, kinder, but all in all, still moving forward.

  5. You've got another gear, you just have to kick it in. I've no doubt that soon enough your 1 forward 2 back will flip-flop until you have only forward momentum. You go Jack!

  6. Logging my food worked for me. I was stuck at 48 pounds and just hit 55. I entered the 100s again and feeling good! If I don't want to write it down, I won't eat it.

  8. OMG Jack, this is exactly where Im at now. I know a lot of the voices in my head are good ole self-sabotage enemies too. But knowing something logically doesnt always translate into emotional calm.
I love how youre looking for another gear and kicking into serious-mode. I want to follow your example! Be all, "oh yeah, thats all you got? take this flab and flubber" LOL. ugh. But you know what I mean. Heck its what YOU mean....no more fucking around! :-D

  9. It makes all the difference - I got stuck going nowhere fast and rededicated myself almost 2 weeks ago - I'm like 8lbs down since then - sometimes you just need a good swift kick in the @ss.

  10. Totally! I hit my first real plateau...in other words, it wasn't because of eating/stopping exercise. I have gotten to used to my slow walking, so a friend and I are committed to three races: a 5K in May, a half marathon in October and a full marathon in January 2012. I love training for a goal.

  13. If anyone can make going to a personal trainer funny it's you :)
My fitness has increased quite dramatically since I got a personal trainer at the beginning of the year. It's a great way to crank things up a few gears.

  14. Jack, this is what happens with this journey.. it sometimes kicks us in the butt & says - you best try something new or up the intensity or check what is going in the mouth.. plus with age - and I don't know your exact age - but from my experience, age kicks our ass & says that we have to work harder or smarter or both! :-)

  15. If anybody can do it, I know you can. When you were first starting to lose weight I'd come over here and just be so jealous as you dropped pounds and I was at a standstill or even gaining. *gasp* It was inspiring to me to watch you drop those pounds.

    You can do it!

  17. I'm right there with you, Jack, although I'm at a different point in my journey, like, duh, right at the beginning!

Started logging my food again yesterday, and doing the first session of a new circuit workout tomorrow... after hauling my butt back on the treadmill again tonight.

Hoping that this will finally get my (big fat) rear in gear!

  18. I really like the phrase weight-loss watusi. I don't like doing the weight-loss watusi but it's a fact of life.

I know that it's time for me to find another gear as well. Thanks for the reminder.
