I Am Not Average

One to two pounds.

That’s it.

That’s the average weight gain for an individual between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

That’s pretty good news I guess. It’s not the seven to ten pounds that I always thought it was during the holidays.

However, there’s bad news.

You knew there was bad news, didn’t you?

According to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, most people don’t ever lose the pound of weight that they put on during the holidays.

Since the average weight gain during adulthood is about one to two pounds a year, that means much of midlife weight gain can be explained by holiday eating.

I was well on my way to that one-two pound holiday gain last week, but I dug in and got back on track.

I figure there will be plenty of holiday treats and temptations to work through in the weeks to come, but I’m gonna keep working, keep pushing, keep going.

Who wants to be average anyway?

THE WEEKLY PHYSIQUELY

  1. Pish posh. I can totally gain 10 pounds during the holidays. I decided to lose 5 pounds this December instead though. It's a little harder during the holidays but hey, ensuring my pants fit will make the holidays a lot less awkward.

    Great job on the loss!

  3. Hi! Don't you think it would be great to set up a page where all of your weekly physiquely photos are next to each other? I imagine it to be something like the Noah takes a picture of himself every day project. It would be great to see your face change!

  4. Average schmaverage. I was at a standstill for the week after Thanksgiving and THRILLED! Now ... if I stay there for the month of December I'll be singing a different tune. Maybe you could write it for me ;)

  6. Well done, Jack! I pried off my Thanksgiving bloat/ weight as well. This is why I only own clothes that fit me *now*, as opposed to 10 pounds from now... LOL! Keeps me on track :)

  7. I agree, who wants to be average?!
I joined Curves over here in Japan in early October and have been working pretty hard. I haven`t really lost any weight pounds wise, but my measurements are shrinking and people are noticing. In 2 weeks I fly home to Texas for the holidays and there`s no Curves in my hometown. I`d hate to put all my hard work so far to waste, so I am imagining a two week stay at home with a lot less food and drinking than usual. Either that or a lot more jogging :) Good luck to you Jack!
