Wicked Britches

I am haunted by fat pants.

Hibernating on the top shelf on my closet.

Laid to rest in a large Tupperware tomb deep within my attic.

Waiting, waiting, waiting.

Besides having no style, fat pants have no mercy, no memory, no pride.

Their elastic waistbands whisper: “We’ll take you as you are.”

Their oversized seat assures: “We’ll always be here for you.”

In the past, I have ditched britches as fast as I could lay claim to a smaller size. I thought I was burning the bridge behind me, but should have realized that the world is full of bridges, and crossing the gap back to those fat pants is as easy as… well… pie.

I’ve lost roughly 70 pounds in the last two years, but I’ve kept a most of those fat pants close by. I don’t hold on to them as a denim-and-khaki safety net, mind you; I keep them to provide a healthy dose of fear and reality to the task at hand.

I keep them as a constant reminder that what I do is a choice.

I can eat healthy and exercise… and wear the pants I have on right now.

I can stray from my purpose and my plan and revisit the ghosts of my past.

And my pants.

  2. I keep my fat pants, too.
    One pair.
Take em out every now and then.
Kinda like a Vet would take out an old Army uniform
    decorated with medals. *sigh*
The battle of the bulge, I guess!

  3. Unfortunately, I'm still wearing mine, now held up with suspenders. I've got a way to go so I'm trying to keep on using them until I can skip a couple of sizes. I've got a long way to go and don't want five pair of intermediate fat pants at the end of it.

  4. I burned all my fat pants in a bonfire, but I kept a fatass belt around as a reminder. Thanks for the post man.

  5. I've kept one pair of fat pants (really nice jeans, actually) and I did them out every so often to remind myself that I will NEVER be that size again.

    Great post, my friend.

  6. I wrote a post about pants last year. I have kept two pairs of pants that don't fit, One is the size 20 I was wearing when I started this journey and the other is a size 10 that I will be wearing by Christmas this year. I took a picture of me in the 20's on my defat-iversary, it was sort of amazing, but i got rid of all the other ones.

  7. Love this! Thanks for sharing. I am always undecided whether it is best to ditch them or keep them!

  8. I have so many clothes I need to go through and get rid of, many too big, some too small. I am constantly amazed at the emotional power they hold over me, positive or negative!
    Have a great weekend Jack!

  10. I can't wait until I can take some of my current clothes and put them aside in a box marked "Fat Clothes." It will happen one of these days, I promise! I've lose 27 pounds so far, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon!
