Back on the Wagon

If you stop by this place even halfway regularly (and if you do, I probably should take this opportunity to tell you how awesome you are), you may have noticed that I've lost a number of pawns (and maybe a knight and possibly one of those pointy-headed guys) on my healthy-living chessboard.

And it hasn't always been that I've fallen completely off the wagon, but most days I do seem to be dragging my feet off the side, kicking up a lot of dust and grime and basically grinding my progress to a frustrating halt.

I can see with perfect clarity that I've been on the dreaded gain-it-back track, and if I don't make some course corrections... well, I don't like to think about it.

And that's the rub, isn't it? That we get to a point where we don't really think about what we're doing. We lose focus and start losing our way. A few bad choices that quickly become bad habits.

I'd still rather act a fool in this space than address the real-life, real-world issues that we all face, but it's crystal-clear to me that it's time to get a little serious about this stuff. I'm ready to get on a roll again, and I don't mean a jelly roll, deli roll or belly roll.

So I'm back on the wagon, but strapping in a little more towards the center, away from the whoops-there-I-go-again edges. The view isn't quite as spectacular, but there's less of a chance of going over the side.

Buckle up, my friends, and let's ride!

  1. I am with you. In losing weight we do not need to lose our humor. I have to avoid using it to block me from realities. Keeping the pounds off is a complex issue. I can laugh as long as I do not use it to hide.

  5. I will say this. All progress is not linear. Maybe this is really what it's all about - some ebb and flow. About learning, unlearning and relearning.

  6. I love the humor but I love the fact that you are moving forward from some gains and getting back on track even more!

  8. Good to discuss Jack! I wrote a post a while back about this dreaded gain when people think they are in maintenance.. how the mindset of a little of this & that will not matter because look how far I have come.. but the prob is that a little of this or that catches up with a person & 3 months out, 5 or 7 pounds are on & if it is not stopped then.. well a few more months and...

Glad to hear you are working out a plan that you think will be better for you!

  10. I need to climb back onto that wagon with you today, as I don't want to stop at 20 pounds down with another 100 to go! But that's kinda what's happening...

  11. Pick your feet up and quit dragging them off the side like Fred Flintstone! You'll get to your destination faster if there's no drag, you know?

Glad you're back on track. You're right we all have to be careful of the creeps. Bad habits creeping back in.

    George: "Off the wagon"?
Jerry: I think it's off the wagon.
George: I think it's "on the wagon".

  22. I'm in the same boat right now (or should I say riding the same wagon). Does it make me sound mean to say that I feel happy I'm not the only one right now? Well all I can say is that you're an inspiration and I know you'll get in that center. And you know what? I'll be there with you! Hell yeah!

    love

  23. I fell off the wagon this past winter as depression and stress sank its ugly teeth in and I have no one to blame but myself. I gained almost 20 pounds back but I did not let that discourage me. I know that when I treat myself better and eat right I can deal with life with a clear head and much better than in a sugar or caffeine laden fog. Thanks Jack for your blog it makes me feel more human to know that I am not the only one who has set backs and falls off the wagon every now and then. I think its more important how you deal with it and to get back up and in the game!!

  24. Could you please ask the driver of the wagon to slow the hell down so I'll quit falling off. Hang in and hang on Jack!! Great post.

  28. I am struggling too. I have one foot on the wagon and I feel like I keep getting pulled off. Frustrating but we can do this!

  29. I just got on the wagon after dragging behind, barely tied on with a rope to the back of it. Well, then I fell off. But I caught up!

New reading here, and I love all your play on words. Glad I found your blog.
