On the Scale Today? No Weigh!

Weekly weigh-in: ******
Loss: -******
Total loss: -*****
Emotion: **************

I’m on the road this week, chillaxing up near Glacier National Park, a thousand miles or more from my ol’ pal, the bathroom scale.

I may be losing my weekly weigh-in, but I’m gaining something else in the process: well, yeah… it’s a few pounds that I’m gaining, but you know how that goes.

You start off with good plans and high hopes, and then you pull out of your driveway…

My wife Anita and I have an old saying that we use as an excuse for our occasional overindulgence: “Everything’s just so delicious!” Well, it is!

I really do appreciate a really good meal, a nice bottle of wine, a decadent dessert. I don’t think, over the years, that those kinds of things were necessarily my problem. No, what did me in was the everyday poor choices, the mindless snacking, the piss-poor habits married with a much-too-sedentary lifestyle.

Our plans for this trip involve plenty of hiking, plenty of activity, plenty of get-up-and-go. I’m certain that the calories won’t balance out at the end of the day, but it won’t be a complete disaster.

And who knows? Maybe I’ll be chased by a grizzly bear and really get a good workout in…

  1. Grizzly bears love tasty humans. And think, if he catches you and tears off a leg, that's weight loss. Sure, it'll be more difficult to stand on the scale . . . .but you can't have everything! Enjoy your trip!

  2. Don't worry, Jack.
    Grizzly bears only eat "gristle."
You are sweet, so you're safe.

  6. You're in one of my dream destinations - take a zillion pics to share. Maybe you could ask the grizzly to just take a little of the ole spare tire?

  9. Enjoy! I've been to Glacier and absolutely LOVED it there! Saw black bears in the wild, which is one of the highlights of my life so far (I live in England, so a deer is about the most exotic wildlife we have around here!)

  12. Beautiful! Enjoy the Chillaxation.

I just got back from vacay with a nice little souvenier: 5 extra pounds. Better be temporary!

  13. Glacier National Park...in Montana? Hey, you're not far from Canada! Why'ncha pop on up here and visit some of your Canadian readers!? LOL. Enjoy your vacation!

And you're so right...it really is the mindless everyday snacking that does you (and by you I mean me) in. A treat once in awhile is NOT the problem!

  14. On my favorite vacation I ate everything in sight and there wasn't a gelato shop I missed, yet I still managed to lose six pounds in fourteen days. Funny how walking EVERYWHERE will do that.

  15. So jealous of the vacay! I have a list of "places I want to go" - and you're at one of them. Enjoy it all and soak in the beauty of your surroundings. You are a lucky duck. :)

  17. Wonderful. Enjoy. Your comments about enjoying a good meal not being the problem hit home for me-pure wisdom, no doubt gained from serene scenery and chillaxing.... I'm going to have to reference that wisdom on my blog one day. I

  18. Enjoy Jack and enjoy that bottle of wine! It's a vacation and a treat should be part of the fun.

PS: don't forget to look back when you're running for that bear and take a pic.

  19. Have a great trip - you're right, the occasional delicious meal won't have too much of an impact ... just don't do as I do and go bat-shit crazy just because it's holiday ... you'll regret it later ;o)

Enjoy the hiking and lovely food though :o)

  21. I truly believe that a vacation isn't really one unless you are truly relaxed ... worry about pounds when you get back! :)

  22. Vacation is meant to be enjoyed without a scale and worry about weight. So do that. Enjoy your food and your activity. Hope y'all have a great time! :)

  23. I completely agree with this sentiment. I am not following it for about the next three months, but thereafter, while I am puttering around in the 130's...well, I will apply it then lol.
just tired of being stuck here in the 150's. Enjoy yourself Jack.

  25. You're so right. Most of us didn't get heavy eating fine food and drinking wine. It was too many trips to the vending machine, the fast food drive in and the kitchen cookie jar. Have a terrific vacation, eat well and take lots of pictures.

  26. Here's hoping you don't need to rely on a bear to get you moving ;) Enjoy the hiking!

  27. Holidays are just that.

You have learned to be more active and eat well. You've lost a heap of weight. You know that whatever activities, eating, drinking hiking, you do on vacation you are feeding your soul. Enjoy without guilt ... I guess you will do that.

Because you know how to restore your chosen patterns.

I envy you Glacier National Park.
