Booyah!
Weekly weigh-in: 197.5
Loss: -1.0
Total loss: 95.0 lbs.
Emotion: Exuberant
Just when I settle in to the idea that micro-losses, stalemates and mini-gains are the way it’s gonna be from here on out, the scale shows me a little tender-lovin’ kindness.
Even after 44 weeks on this rock-n-roll roller-coaster, I still can’t say I have a real handle on why the scale does what the scale does. I mean, some weeks I’m absolutely golden and my scale (“Miss Fussybritches”) rewards me with a goose egg (or worse… a gain). Some weeks, I seem to slip, stagger and stumble for days on end, and Miss FB doesn’t punish me the swift kick in the groin I so richly deserve.
It’s a theme I see repeated ad nauseum on other’s weight-loss blogs as well. People give it their all for a week and confusedly report a gain instead of the loss they were expecting. I do my best to ease their minds and soothe their troubled psyches … try to get them to buy in to the idea that scales are finicky creatures that are always trying to undermine our resolve and break our spirit. But truthfully… I got no clue.
I do understand one thing, though. I know that sometimes folks delude themselves when the scale pulls a fast one of them.
“Oh, I ate a donut and a lost two pounds this week. Ergo, donuts lead to weight loss!”
Now I may be ignorant to many of the tiny nuances and intricacies of weight loss, but I don’t try to talk myself into nonsense like that.
In my pursuit to slay The Great White Scale, I’ve held firm to the belief that this isn’t a one-month, six-month, year-long quest. This isn’t a journey from here to there, not a race to any specific finish line.
This is just me doing what I need to do.
This is just me living like I need to live.
So I’ll just keep doing like I’m doing and living like I’m living.
Next week I may curse the scale.
This week, I’ll celebrate it.
Very nice post, Jack! Congrats on yet another drop!!! You will be joining me really, really soon at the triple-digits down club!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on another nice loss Jack!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I think sometimes it just takes the scale a little longer to catch up with our efforts!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Jack! And, happy valentines day! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic Valentine's Day gift!! Enjoy it Jack....you've earned it! :)
ReplyDeleteGood Job Fella!
ReplyDeleteTbh, I Hate my scales with a passion! The lies it tells me.... :)
I know a lot of people choose not to weigh daily for this very reason. I am too tied to that darn thing. And it goes up and down and up and down and sometimes it seems to match what I eat and sometimes it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that it needs to be about living the lifestyle rather than the number.
Nice one! Your description of the love/hate relationship with the scales is perfect!
ReplyDeleteWell said. I think I'll link to this post next time the scale doesn't reward me for some hard work! It's not all fair in eating less and moving more, is it? But, yes, you remind me it's for the long haul, not only for this week. Thanks...I hope this isn't preparing me for a bad week on the scale...I don't know if I can take it!!!
ReplyDeleteNot that I want to see anyone go through what I do with a scale, it is nice to read that you have your ups and downs too. Glad you got some Love from Miss Fussybritches. Only appropriate for Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteSo you're saying that donuts do NOT lead to weight loss? Despite hard evidence to the contrary? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'd say that you have obtained a good end strategy for maintenance. You are just doing what you are doing. Great that you lost another pound. You seem to know that there is no end to this process.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, and thanks for putting into words what so many of us feel on weigh in day!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the steady continued progress. Very inspirational as always. And I love your inner girl that wants the scale to be a friend, not an enemy. FB is the textbood definition of "frenemy".
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the donut tip - off to Dunkin'! (kidding)
Hey greeat job. I love how you describe the way the scale responds to our hard work. Thanks for putting it into words.
ReplyDeleteI'm eating a donut today I really don't care right now what it does to me.
ReplyDeleteCongratulatons! A one pound loss, when you've already lost 94 is HUGE! You continual success keeps me motivated!
ReplyDelete-B
Great job Jack! :) The scale is a mystery to me. I know my body and it likes to save up, sometimes show a lil gain then I get a bigger number all of a sudden. I think what matters to me is the each MONTH (no matter what the weekly weigh in tells me) I am down...and being a LOSER is really what this journey is all about. :)
ReplyDeleteOh how true. The mysteries of our bodies tell their stories through the fluctuation of the numbers on the scale.
ReplyDeleteTerrific job!
ReplyDeleteI have finally come to the realization that no matter what the scale says, I am going to continue to make the healthiest choices in my life. Exercise and wholesome foods are a normal part of my life now. And even if the scale doesn't "show me the money", I'll keep on keepin on...just like you :D
Congrats on the loss Jack.
ReplyDeleteFriday I celebrate, Monday I cry :)
It's the way of the FussyBritches scale in my life.
Congratulations on the loss!
ReplyDeleteGreat loss!
ReplyDeleteI'm so a slave to that fickle b*tch!
ReplyDeleteAw! You got a Valentine from Miss Fussybritches!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the loss!
Congratulations! And I love your attitude about the scale. Taking away the emotional toll the scale can create is very liberating. It's strange---the main thing we use to measure our success, has tripped up so many along this road... You my friend, have mastered the scale. You control it, it doesn't control you.
ReplyDeleteNice post my friend,
Sean
So true--so true!!! It never ceases to amaze me that the numbers on the scale (that ONLY I can see) can have SUCH a huge impact on my resolve and my subsequent success in the day to come. I have to sometimes psych myself into believing that instead of that 1 pound difference ( in the wrong way) I saw an alltime low. Weird, I know, but it SO helps me get thru without falling!
ReplyDeleteWhat? When I have a loss after stuffing my face it doesn't mean my life is an all-you-can-eat-buffet from now on? Darn it all!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Jack :)
Great job! I'm glad the scale was kind to you this week.
ReplyDeleteso it's booyah...not Doooonuuuutsssss!
ReplyDeleteGot it. Thanks!
;o)
I used to be a 'weigher' at a WW meeting and so was able to notice a few patterns... the key one? What you did in the past 2 or 3 weeks can catch up with you. So people who had a 'perfect week' and gained sometimes had a bad week the week before and 'got away with it'. Of course there are a trillion other influences, but that one was fairly common!
ReplyDeleteWell done on your loss!!!
Nice loss. You have a great attitude about it all too :o)
ReplyDeleteJack, so true & so real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take a peek at my Tuesday post. Of course read all the others but I think you may like the Tuesday one a lot.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great attitude...and congrats.
ReplyDeleteUltimately, when you eat on your program and stay active, the scale is moot. Your body will become what it is destined to be. But yes, we do love the markers the scale provides for us.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I know. It's not what you weigh this week or next. It's what you will weigh two years from now that is important. Because it is two years from now where you will truly see the impact of this way of eating/moving/thinking.
We hid the scale for a year once, and we both gained weight...
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I also hate my scale, but what are you going to do, right?! It's always nice when you can celebrate with a good week!
ReplyDeleteAre you trying to tell me eating ice cream only doesn't lead to weight loss? Geez. I can take a hint.
ReplyDeleteBut hey, good job this week. Glad the scale was nice to you.
Way to go Jack!
ReplyDeleteWhen are you going to post a sample menu of what you eat? I'm really dying to know. You have it figured out!
Congrats on the great loss. I'm loving your stellar approach to just living how you need to live. That's what this is all about right??
ReplyDeleteNow how do I join the Jack Pack? Is this like a wolf pack or something? Do initiations only happen every full moon?!? ;)
I've given up on the scale. I only get paranoid and antsy just thinking about the next weigh in.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations my fellow beer lover!! I am so proud of you!! Tonight, I will drink two extra beers...one for the 95 lbs gone from you, and 61 lbs gone from me ;-)
ReplyDelete(No offense, but I probably would have drank the extra beers anyways)
