Anti-Booyah!

Weekly weigh-in: 199.0
Loss: +1.5
Total loss: 93.5 lbs.
Emotion: Non-exuberant

The Bible describes Hell as a place of darkness, sorrow and torment. “Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 22:13).

I don’t mean to belittle the concept of eternal damnation, but 1.5 pounds? What the fat?

My cranky ho-bag of a scale did me incredibly wrong this week. I mean, I stepped on and my eyes went all Bugs Bunny ahhhooooooogggaaaaa!!! I did a double-take. I did a triple-take. Five takes later, it was still the same.

A pound and a half.

A postcard from the dark side.

A flaming bag of poo left on my front doorstep.

Sixteen teeny-tiny ounces away from the exit door from Onederland.

There I go, thinking I have The Minus Touch, where every weigh-in shows a health-affirming loss. Where every trip to the scale ends with a happy dance and a high five for the dude in the mirror.

This was the biggest gain I’ve had in 45 weeks on this weight-loss roller coaster. What’s my takeaway from this crappy week?
  • Grapes aren’t calorie-free.
  • Water doesn’t drink itself.
  • Small decisions can have a big impact.
  • If you generally only go out to eat once a week, and you go out twice this past week, that’s twice as much as you normally do.
  • When's the last time you didn't clean your plate, bozo?
  • When you’re cooking something, and you eat a dozen bites… ummmm, something clever here about how that’s not a good thing.
  • You probably should “work” during your workout.
  • My good habits aren’t necessarily as ingrained as I’d like to think they are.
Don’t waste your breath telling me that everything will be okay and that I’ll get it back this week, because I know that everything will be okay and that I’ll get it back this week. I'm double ding-dong sure of it (though I'm already seriously regretting using the phrase "double ding-dong sure of it."

But that's over and done with, just like seeing that number on the scale.

I’m going to kick it old-school over the next seven days (just as soon as I Google “kick it old-school” and see what that actually means).

I will make a plan and I’ll stick to it. I’ll hit the gym with a renewed ferocity. If it takes counting calories, then by God, I'll even count calories.

This week, I’m gonna bring it… and I expect to bring good news on my next weigh-in.

x

  1. Just proves you are human and on the same journey as the rest of us. Still inspiring and yes! It;s done.

    Have a great week!

  2. I don't know any road out there that doesn't have a few bumps in it...

  3. Calories are friggin sneaky, they are like ants at a picnic!

  4. If there's one thing that I've learned over this 2 1/2 year journey of losing weight, it's that old habits don't die hard. They resurrect themselves after months of being buried just as if they were still kickin. It always amazed me and I would often beat myself up over the fact that I allowed those habits to come back into play.

I'm finally at the point where I KNOW FOR SURE that I am NEVER going back to being 234 pounds. Those old habits may want to revisit, but I kick them out mother-in-law-fast! New, "ingrained" habits get to stay and I focus on the fact that even though I may stray here and there, EVERY GOOD CHOICE COUNTS.

Don't be hard on yourself, Jack. You are doing a tremendous job at this and your ingrained habits will be stickin around :)

  5. We all have bad weeks. Shrug it off and keep on keepin on.

  6. Being that close to the exit door is some scary shit, huh? I have no doubt that next week's weigh-in will have you going back in the right direction. That's what the ho-bag's for....to keep you on track and pull you back in line when you need it. Just be glad you weigh once a week and not once a month. :)

  7. Kick that fat back out the door!

  8. Gawd, I SO want to kick it old school with you too. I think I'll hit the gym hard this afternoon as well. (P.S. Old school is the best school sometimes.)

  10. Are you sure it's not water retention? Is TOM coming?

    Just kidding.....

  11. That's the spirit!!! Kick it & kick it good!! No pity parties around here! You got this!

  12. Okay, my standard response to this is related to periods but, well, you're a guy and I doubt the time of the month argument is going to hold any of that water you haven't been drinking.

Use the aaaaarrrrrooooogggaaahhhh moment as motivation for next week for sure.

  13. I think it's water weight...that time of the month? Ok, maybe not. Get to crack-a-lackin! I'll do my part from this end of the world.

  14. Oh Jack---hold on my friend. You're gonna kick that scales a** next week.
I get you. I do. Completely...

Hang tough---kick it old school (i don't know what that means either, but it sounds really cool) and pull out the stops. You're a weight loss warrior my friend.

    My best
    Sean

me love the white seedless grapes. Oh how I wish they were calorie free!!

  15. I like your list of reasons. I like to do that when I have a less than stellar week. It helps to kick it old school style!

  16. At the risk of sounding not-terribly-sympathetic, if I did ALL that, 1.5lbs on would be the least of my worries! More like 5lbs! ;o) (That may have something to do with portion control, though!)

    ReplyDelete
  17. If I were that HO BAG scale Id be worried, very worried for next week! GO GET EM JACK! :)

  18. I feel ya on this one Jack. And hey, did you know that Girl Scout Cookies aren't calorie-free? I learned that one the hard way last night. Who knew?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah bring it Jack!

I was tripped up by some raspberry bullets covered in white chocolate this week. A few can't hurt right? Oh,yes they can! They not called bullets for nothing!

  20. Ya, I had the same thing this week. But for me, if I am going to eat Sushi for lunch, and Vietnamese for dinner, never mind the small plate of Chinese food - well I deserved it this week.

  21. Hi Jack. Yep. You can never drop your guard for a second or those bleeping calories are gonna get you.

    Bearfriend xx

  22. Sweetie, I returned the favour and was by your house early this morning and played around with your scale a little, it was only fair :-)

In all seriousness Jack, you are awesome don't let that number get you down, chin up my friend!

  23. Hey, as you've demonstrated so well: it's about the long haul... Using this painful zap as a complacency alarm? Brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, water definitely doesn't drink itself, a slogan that I need to tattoo somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Looking forward to seeing a loss next time :)

  26. Interesting how I find posts that I most need to read. Just prior to reading this I was thinking about how I really need to get back to basics this week. Thanks for spelling out the action steps.

  27. Having had an anti-booyah of sorts today myself, I feel ya! And I can't say I'm kickin' it old school cuz I never really did kick it that way or I wouldn't have ended up where I did so I'm kickin it Shelby 2010 style! Meet ya next week and we'll both have booyah days, I betcha.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A gain? You suck! My hopes are totally dashed...I need a new hero!

Just kidding...seemed like a reaction you'd appreciate, though.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 'The Minus Touch'... I like that!

Sorry you are experiencing the anti-booyah; on the plus size (pun intended) at least you are putting off the non-stop trip around the world cause, man, that will be tiring!

  30. It's food. It's tasty and it's hard not to eat it.
Especially when You look and feel good and 'really it's just five *insert food here*
    (for me it's been pretzels.)
My calorie losses have been anemic to say the least.
I am retaining like a mofo and my ring is biting into my ring finger. I have no idea why I am retaining. So yea, I feel you bud.
Luckily it wasn't 110 lbs and it isn't a year later. Its a week later.
Back on the krab...or the bike...or the elliptical.
see the lighter you next week.

  31. Bet you looked silly weighing naked with your shoes on.

  32. Bring it! And share the details! My kids are trying to con me into dropping $120 on P90x.....thinking about it....in the name of good motherhood, of course (but..also in the name of....I CAN DO IT TOO....).

  33. three steps forward and 2 steps back

  34. There's just something so wrong about a scale that posts a freakin' gain on you. But you know the dilly as you have described in this post. It all boils down to move more / eat less. How I wish the laws of nature would change sometimes.

You took your foot off the gas for a week. It happens. 1.5 is not that bad of a penalty for that. I look forward to your promise to bring it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. double ding dong, huh? lol

I know you don't want the 'atta boys' but dang Jack, we all stumble sometimes & sh*t happens & well...the good news is that it is a minor hiccup in the scheme of things. You've done great things & this will soon be distant memory overshadowed by more good things. :)

Best wishes for your 'old school' week.
    Lynn

  36. LOL "The Minus Touch" - of course you still have it!

This would be the proper time to get down on your knees and thank God you do not have to deal with these weight fluctuations regularly, unlike your female counterparts. Seriously, I'm ecstatic if I only fluctuate by 1.5 in a week!

Meanwhile, way to find the humor in the situation- as usual!

  37. Are you "playing" the "game"? Because anybody that's been in this thing 45 weeks ... knows what it takes. Just be honest and tell us when you're "playing the game"

  38. It really is too bad for you men who can't blame these things on TOM...
I know you'll be kickin' some serious booty this week - scared'a you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. nothing like being bitched slapped by the scales to light a fire under your butt again, hey? LOL
I'm so glad I am not the only one who talks smack to the scales. However, telling the scales we are going to throw down & that I am going to lay the smackdown on it's candy ass draws some stares from the other ladies at Weight Watchers.
Plus I think me talking like The Rock just trumped your double ding dong Flanderism. :)

  40. I wish you had taken pictures. Of your eyes doing the cartoon thing and of your five attempts on the scale. It would have made for an interesting non-word post. Just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  41. way to put it behind you (uh, figuratively, not literally!) and move on. you can't change what's already done. the only thing you can do is learn from it and clearly you have.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Urban dictionary says the following about kick it old school: "when someone wants have sex with someone, and/or kick it, thats what they say"

    Sounds like a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's because you wrote that great post on the scale not so long ago. Life's like that...what the fat is right? I may steal that saying!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ugh! The weeks when the scale blips up for no good reason are hard enough, but when there exists the teensiest possibility that we actually *earned* the bounce...well, it's especially frustrating. And, as you noted, motivating.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'll be kickin' it old school with you this week. My scale needs a good ass kicking anyway! Have a good week!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jack, I have no doubt you will be back at it. If I were there, I would have you in that gym sweating big time! :-)

As for this:When you’re cooking something, and you eat a dozen bites… ummmm, something clever here about how that’s not a good thing

This is huge! I tell people over & over.. those little bites keep adding up & before you know it... UGH!

Back to the hard work, right Jack! Tough love!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Meh, I've had weigh-ins just like this one. A lot of them recently lol. Good luck putting it into overdrive.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm pretty sure kicking it old school means breaking out the short-shorts, knee-high gym socks, sweatbands (head and wrist), and doing something like jumping rope while listening to old music. Yeah. I'll expect pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I live in Hell, too, Jack.
    Want a Hertz Donut?
    *slap*
    Hurts - Don't it?!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I gained too. Maybe the scales are going on strike? Phooey to the gains!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I am ready to see you bring it!!! I will also remember to work when I work out... Which I guess I should do right now...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yep, on the same boat. Been at this 3 years, I should know better but OF COURSE not, right? Oh well. The first day of the rest of my life is today, right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yea, we all have to kick our own butts sometimes. But that's how ya do it just keep that balance beam as even as you can and when it tilts in the wrong direction you put sweat and ice water on the other side not donuts lol.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I am speaking for myself when I say this:
This is why I no longer relish stepping on a scale. I get all paranoid over a little gain. O.o It triggers my EDs...

    ReplyDelete
  55. thank you for the chuckle and reminders. it is so easy to just nibble a bit here and a bit there and think it doens't really matter but it does add up. thanks again!
