Ways Losing Weight Is Like Marriage

  • It all starts with a vow.
  • Some days are harder than others.
  • You’ll sometimes go to bed mad.
  • It takes some people several attempts to get it right.
  • Some people never get it right.
  • You have to work harder than you ever imagined.
  • It can be very rewarding.
  • At times, you might need a counselor to help get things on track.
  • Sometimes you want what somebody else has.
  • After you commit, you have to quit doing whatever you want.
  • You no longer wear the dress you wore when you started.
  • Keeping it going is hard, but ending it is more expensive in the long run.
  • Cheating doesn’t lead to anything good.
  • It’s not going to work unless your spouse helps.
  • Some people do it for the children.
  • If it feels too much like work, chances are you’re not going to be successful with it.
  • It gives you a reason to become a better person than you already are.
  • If you do it right, it lasts the rest of your life.
I remember asking my Grandpa Noah how much it cost to get married. He thought it over, then replied, “I don't know, Jackie. I'm still paying for it.”

  1. Hmmmmmm. A thinker. I wasn't prepared to think this morning. But you're right about the similarities.

  3. Ha! Kinda makes me wary and excited to be getting married... Well, since I'm loving losing weight, I'm sure I'll love marriage too.

  4. What about the sex myths? There's the if I lose the weight, I'll get more sex myth. And then there's the marriage = more sex myth.

I was fooled both times! Shame on me. *grin*

  7. Excellent post as always! These parallels are spot on! I've been married 20 years to the same wonderful woman and now I'm losing a bunch of weight for the first time in my life---so I can totally relate to this brilliance.

    My best always,

  16. This is totally unrelated to this post (which was pretty dad gum brilliant by the way) but whenever I picture the writer of a blog (I tend to do that, not sure why), I picture you as Jack from Jack in the Box. Yes, I obsess about food a little too much. DON'T JUDGE! ;-)

  17. Very thoughtful post.. . another likeness. . . things only get stronger when you make it through the hard times. . .

Hmmm it took me a sec to realize what TMcGee was saying. . . I pictured a springing red nosed guy after the music stopped, and that didn't seem like you at all.

Being the literalist I am. . . I picture you as a naked adonis of course (well, David, Adonis, whatever. . .)

  18. I tell ya, I never get writer's block... until it comes to answering comments.

I look kinda like a cross between Jack in the Box Jack and a naked adonis.

  19. Aren't you the guy who only has half a beard? Or was that your stunt double? Another great post, Naked Jack David Sh*t.

  20. Basically a naked Jack from Jack in the Box...well, at least your face is covered so your real life job is safe.

  21. I love this post. I've been married for 32 years and watching my weight longer than that. My favorite is the last one. I did both of these things right and so far they are both lasting a lifetime. LOL . Love the blog.
